Brief
From a fuzzy request to a written brief
Ten headings to turn a fuzzy request into a written brief, ready to send to an agency or provider. The tool writes the document and lists unanswered questions.
The problem
Most of the communication projects that slip have started badly: a request passed to the oral, without objective, without budget and without anyone to validate. The provider Devine, offers next door, and the round trips cost more than the project. Brief templates exist, but they are blank pages with holes that no one fills to the end.
What I did
I took up the questions that a service provider always ends up asking and I ordered them in ten sections, with deliverables that adapt to the type of project: video, identity, site, event, campaign, edition. I designed the interface, drafted the aids, and developed and put online the tool alone.
The result
A structured brief, which is copy in text in an e-mail or prints in PDF. The headings left empty appear as questions that the service provider will ask, with the reason why they count: without an envelope, the proposals are not comparable; Without a single validator, the round trips multiply.
What I learned
What you don't want is often more useful to a service provider than what you want: I made it a separate section. And showing what is missing works better than making it mandatory. A mandatory field fills up anyhow; A question left visible makes you think.
Autonomy: share of the project built on my own, without a developer. Maturity: progress, from idea to a product people use.
